Lighthouse Home School Group is a home schooling support group where members seek top pool their talents and resources in a collective effort to broaden the scope of home based education. It is a cooperative in which some classes are taught by participating parents and some have hired teachers. We meet one day a week (Thursdays) at Columbia Street Baptist Church, 63 Columbia St., Bangor, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. Parents oversee student’s work during the other 4 days of the week. Parents appreciate the additional support this group provides for classes the parent may not feel comfortable teaching, such as higher level math, science and foreign language. It also provides the environment necessary for classes needing more students than a home school may be able to offer, such as theater productions, home economics and public speaking or debate.
Lighthouse Home School Group has a Mission Statement. Members are informed that Lighthouse is led in accordance with it, by leaders who abide with it, and are required to sign an acknowledgment that they have been so informed.
As a way of accomplishing our mission, we will:
*Provide opportunities for our children to learn from others in the group and engage in activities that further their interests.
1. Complete new member form application.
2. Pay a one time $25 non-refundable registration for your family. (This will be applied toward the cost of tuition, but is non-refundable. Setup an interview with the Coordinators to discuss joining the co-op. Application process is required.
3. Classes may have additional fees. For example if labs for chemistry require extra materials, there may be additional fees. All fees will be kept to a minimum
4. Be willing to teach a class, assist in a class, help in the child care room, clean up and reset rooms, or a combination of the above. Our members need to be very flexible and willing to do whatever needs to be done. Volunteer requirements of 2 hours per week per semester need to be met. Please see Things to Consider Page for more information.
We would like to offer a wide range of classes. What are your ideas? What would you be willing to teach? What would you like to see offered? Your input is important to the success of this co-op.
